NLA Executive Reports Success in Their First Year

National President (2nd left) leading the session
The President, Alhaji Rilwanu Abdulsalami welcomed delegates to the Conference/AGM 1. In his welcome speech, he recounted his promise to make the Nigerian Library Association more visible in our national discourse and that "advocacy would be used in achieving or implementing most of the programmes that would be laid out." According to him, the Executive has been able to achieve a level of success during the first year of his tenure as outlined below:

  • Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of the Nigerian Library Association (NLA) with Polish Librarian's Association (PLA) through singular effort of His Excellency (Ambassador) Sam Jimba. The MoU provided for a fellowship that would enable a young Librarian from Nigeria to undertake a one week visit to some selected Libraries in Warsaw in order to acquaint and improve his knowledge in modern Librarianship. The first winner of the Fellowship has visited Poland. In turn, a Polish Librarian will also present a paper at a plenary session tomorrow.
  • For the first time, a Director (Library Services) has been appointed in the Federal Civil Service in Nigeria. This is the first time in the history of the Library Profession in the Federal Civil Service. Again, the request by the NLA Executive fir the creation of a Department of Library Service in the Federal Civil Service is receiving attention  by the Head of Service.
  • Reports of various ad-hoc committees on NLA awards and role of Fellows of the Association in the overall business of the NLA.
