Over 700 participants attended NLA Conference in Anambra

Over 700 participants across the country attended the 49th National Conference and Annual General Meeting of Nigerian Library Association (NLA) that took place between 10-15 July, 2011 at Emmaus House, Awka, Anambra state.

Flagging off the conference
Flagging off the conference, Governor Peter Obi, represented by Chief Maja Umeh (Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism), stated that the state was highly delighted to host the momentous event and enumerated achievements of his administration towards library development such as building a modern library in honour of the first African black Vice chancellor of University of Ibadan, Late Prof Kenneth Dike.



The national President of NLA, Professor Larie Aina (FNLA) , in his welcome address, stated that the theme : Information For All: Strategy for National Development” derived from the fact that information occupies a strategic role in human development, irrespective of social status and educational background.

Prof Aina commended the President Goodluck Jonathan and the immediate past national Assemble members for enacting the freedom of information Act (FOI), stressing that librarianship profession is a major stakeholder in information access.

Tour of Anambra State
Participants that had a tour of the Anambra state to appraise government projects were overwhelmed to see the enormous work that Governor Peter Obi led administration has done.



Innovations & commendable Achievements at Awka 2011
There are a lot of innovations and laudable things at this year conference.
The are some notables ones:


  • Book of abstracts on 39 articles was produced;

  • Proceeding of 21 papers, running to over 350p was published;

  • 39 papers were presented in parallel sessions in 3 venues within 3 days. -This is like IFLA, SCECSAL and most international conferences;

  • Representatives of NLA on d LRCN were elected to enable d new Council to take off;

  • Dinner for all at the Government house was sponsored by the state governor who was present with four commissioners and a special assistant;

  • For the 1st time in the history of NLA national conference, seating Governor was attended conferecne dinner in person.

Others:



  • Free internet access;

  • Exciting cultural show;

  • Good hot lunch served in plates and sufficient for all;

  • Clean toilets;

  • Well organised exhibition; etc
